[데빌 메이 크라이 5] - (번역) V 시점에서의 DMC5 스토리 정리

열흘? 전쯤 루리웹 DMC5 게시판에 올린 내용. 블로그에도 올려본다.

DCM5 스토리를 읽다보니 재밌어서 V의 이야기를 중심으로 정리해봤다.

데빌 메이 크라이 팬덤 위키에 있는 V의 스토리와 프리퀄 소설의 요약본을 번역한 내용을 바탕으로 시간 순서로 정리했다.
 
간단 요약만 보려면 검은색 글씨만 보면 되고, 좀 더 자세한 내용을 원한다면 파란색 글씨도 함께 보면 된다.

- 나름 최대한 그대로 번역하려고 했으나 몇몇 의역이 들어간 문장도 있으며,

좀 더 자연스럽게 고쳐쓴 부분도 있으니 감안해서 봐주길.

- 추가로 설명이 필요한 부분은 특수기호 '*'표시와 함께 초록색 글씨로 문장 아래에 설명을 붙여두었다.

- V 말투는 일본어 음성에서는 반말을 사용하기에 반말로 쓸지, 존댓말로 쓸지 고민했다만

게임 내 자막도 존댓말로 나오고 팬덤 위키의 V의 성격에 대한 설명도 공손하다고 언급되어 있어서 존댓말로 통일했다.

- 욕설의 경우, 약간의 언어 순화(..)를 거쳤다.

 다 죽어가는 몸을 이끌고 포르투나에 당도한 버질은 차고에 혼자 있는 네로를 습격하여 빼앗은 데빌 브링어로부터 야마토를 되찾습니다.

 강제로 팔이 뜯겨나간 고통과 다량의 출혈로 인해 정신을 잃은 네로는 이후 며칠 동안 혼수 상태에 빠지게 됩니다.

 

 

- V의 탄생 -

 

[ 5월 1일 PM 09:19 ]

 

 After being freed from Mundus's control, Vergil was able to escape the Demon World, but his body was weakened and was crumbling from going through battle after battle.
 문두스의 지배로부터 해방된 버질은 마계를 탈출할 수 있었지만 그 몸은 약한 상태였으며 거듭된 전투로 붕괴되고 있었습니다.
 After stealing Nero's Devil Bringer in order to regain Yamato, Vergil then returned to his family's burned mansion in Red Grave City.
 야마토를 되찾기 위해 네로의 데빌 브링어를 빼앗은 버질은 레드 그레이브 시티에 있는 불타버린 가족의 저택으로 돌아갔습니다.

 Fueled by his desire to defeat his twin brother Dante and for power without having. to be hindered by human thought or emotion, Vergil stabbed himself with Yamato to separate his human half from his demon half, sparking the birth of "V" and "Urizen".

 버질은 쌍둥이 동생인 단테를 이겨야한다는 것과 인간의 생각이나 감정에 방해받지 않는 힘에 대한 욕망에 사로잡혀 자신의 악마인 부분에서 인간인 부분을 분리시키기 위해 야마토로 스스로를 찔렀고, "V"와 "유리즌"이 탄생합니다.

 Just seconds after his birth, V was able to retain consciousness and witnessed the horrifying formation of Urizen.
 버질으로부터 분리된지 채 얼마지나지 않아 곧 의식을 유지할 수 있었던 V는 유리즌의 끔찍한 탄생 과정을 목격했습니다.
 In addition to being humanly weak, V was also left with three physical manifestations of Vergil's trauma from his time as Nelo Angelo, taking the forms based of Mundus's minions - Griffon, Shadow, and Nightmare.

 V는 인간적으로 약할 뿐 아니라 버질이 넬로 안젤로였을 때의 트라우마가 그에게 세 가지 물리적 징후를 남겼는데, 문두스의 수하인 그리폰, 쉐도우, 나이트메어의 형태를 하고 있습니다. 

 V's separation from his original self doomed him with a slowly decaying body, which was barely kept together with the lingering remnants of demonic power.
 버질에게서 분리됨으로써 서서히 무너져가는 V의 육체는 그에게 남은 미약한 악마의 힘으로 간신히 유지되었습니다.
 Knowing that Urizen plans to gain power from the Qliphoth tree, V vowed to stop the large-scale destruction and hopefully remerge with Urizen before his body completely crumbles.
 클리포트로부터 힘을 얻으려는 유리즌의 계획을 눈치챈 V는 대량 학살을 막고 자신의 육체가 완전히 무너지기 전에 유리즌과 다시 하나가 될 것을 다짐했습니다.

 

 

 

- 프리퀄 소설(Devil May Cry 5: Before the Nightmare)에서의 작중 행적 -

 

 Knowing Urizen's resurrection is nearing, V goes to Grue's Celler to find J.D. Morrison in order to get into contact with Dante.
 유리즌의 부활이 가까워지자, V는 단테와 접촉하기 위해 J.D 모리슨을 찾아 Grue's Celler*로 향합니다.
 *Grue's Celler : 가게(술집) 이름
 Before entering the bar, V assaulted a random man with Griffon in order to obtain money to pay for Dante's services.
 술집에 들어서기 전, V는 의뢰비를 마련하기 위해 그리폰과 함께 사람을 덮쳤습니다.
 Upon meeting Morrison, V asked him to take him to Dante and hands him the bloodstained money.
 V는 모리슨을 만나 피묻은 돈을 건네주며 자신을 단테에게 데려다 달라고 했습니다.
 Although wary of V and Griffon, Morrison accepts the payment, especially due to wanting V and Griffon not hurting more people just to collect more cash and takes them to Devil May Cry.
 모리슨은 V와 그리폰을 경계하면서도 더이상 그들이 단순히 돈 때문에 사람을 덮치는 것을 원하지 않았기 때문에 단테의 사무소로 데려갑니다.

 

 

 

V와 모리슨의 만남에 대한 자세한 요약
Grue's Celler에 있던 모리슨이 한 남자가 가게 안으로 들어오는 것을 보는 장면부터 시작됩니다.

- Morrison Chapter 1 중 일부 -

  

 He is covered in tattoos, uses a cane, and is described as having. a pale and lifeless face. He is holding a discoloured book with the letter V on it. Morrison considers the possibility that he may not even be human.
 그는 온 몸이 문신으로 덮여 있었고 지팡이를 짚고 있었으며, 창백하고 생기 없는 얼굴을 하고 있었습니다. 그는 'V'가 새겨진 변색된 책을 들고 있었습니다. 모리슨은 그가 인간이 아닐지도 모른다고 생각합니다.

 The party try to explain to the man that it is a private celebration, but he ignores this and asks, “Are you Morrison?”. Morrison nods and asks what he wants. The man says, “Let me meet Dante”. Morrison asks if it is a ‘special request’ and V nods. Morrison accepts this to mean that this client needs help with demons. Morrison apologises to the sisters and tells them that he has some business to take care of.

 일행은 V에게 지금은 사적인 축하 행사 중이라고 설명하려 했지만*, V는 이를 무시한 채 "당신이 모리슨입니까?"라고 묻습니다. 모리슨은 고개를 끄덕이며 그에게 무엇을 원하는지 묻습니다. 그는 "단테를 만나게 해주십시오."라고 말합니다. 모리슨이 그것이 '특별한 부탁'인지 묻자 V가 고개를 끄덕입니다. 모리슨은 이를 그가 악마의 도움을 원하는 것으로 받아들입니다. 모리슨은 자매들(일행)에게 사과한 뒤 처리해야 할 일이 생겼다고 말합니다.

 Morrison and V leave the bar and talk outside. He asks V if he has any money. While Dante will take jobs regarding demons even with no payment, having. money would be beneficial as business hasn’t been booming. In response, V casually hands him dozens of paper bills. Some of the bills appear to have blood stains on them.
 모리슨과 V는 가게를 나와 밖에서 이야기 합니다. 모리슨은 V에게 돈이 있는지 물어봅니다. 단테는 악마와 관련된 일이라면 보수가 없어도 승낙하겠지만 사업이 그닥 번창하지 않았으므로 돈이 있는 편이 유리하기 때문입니다. 이에, V는 무심히 수십장의 지폐를 모리슨에게 건네줍니다. 지폐 중 일부에는 핏자국이 묻어 있는 것 같았습니다.

 Morrison hears a groan behind him. He turns around and sees a man lying in an alleyway surrounded by blood. It appears that he has been attacked by a large bird.
 모리슨은 뒤편에서 웬 신음소리를 듣습니다. 돌아서서 보니 피투성이가 된 골목에 한 남자가 쓰러져 있습니다. 그 남자는 커다란 새에게 공격당한 것으로 보입니다.

 V stretches out his right arm and the bird rests on it. Morrison asks V if that’s his bird, and the bird itself replies that he’s his own bird. Morrison notices that this isn’t like a parrot repeating speech, the bird appears to be able to talk on its own.
 V가 오른팔을 뻗자 새가 그 위에 앉습니다. 모리슨이 V에게 새가 그의 것인지 묻자, 이에 새가 스스로 자신은 V의 것이라 대답합니다. 모리슨은 그 대답이 앵무새의 단순 말대답과는 다르다는 것을 눈치챕니다. 새는 스스로 말을 할 수 있는 것 같았습니다.

 The bird jokes with Morrison that money is money, but if he’s a clean-freak then they’ll go to the bank and swap them for cleaner notes.
 새는 모리슨에게 돈은 그저 돈일 뿐이라고 농담을 던지며, 혹시 그가 결벽증이 있다면 은행에 가서 깨끗한 지폐로 교환해오겠다고 말합니다.

 V tells Morrison that if he’s dissatisfied with the amount, they can collect more. Morrison has a feeling that more people would need to be hurt to get the money, so he says this amount is fine. After all, it’s enough to help his friend living in poverty.
 V는 모리슨에게 금액이 만족스럽지 않다면 더 많이 모을 수 있다고 말합니다. 돈을 더 받으려면 많은 사람들이 다치게 될 것이라는 느낌이 든 모리슨은 금액은 충분하고 말합니다. 어쨌거나 가난한 그의 친구(=단테)를 돕기엔 충분했습니다.

 Morrison, V and Griffon make their way to Dante’s office, but Morrison has two or three places to go first.
 모리슨, V, 그리폰은 단테의 사무실로 향했는데, 그 전에 모리슨은 두세군데 정도 먼저 들릴 곳이 있었습니다.

 At the shop, V introduces himself to Dante and explains that he wants him to stop a powerful demon that is about to be resurrected in Red Grave City.
 사무소에서 V는 단테에게 자신을 소개한 뒤, 레드 그레이브 시티에서 부활하게 될 강력한 악마를 막아달라고 설명합니다.

V가 자신을 단테에게 소개하는 장면에서,

"I have no name, I am but two days old.(전 이름이 없어요, 태어난 지 이틀밖에 안 되었거든요.)"라고 말합니다.

이는 윌리엄 블레이크(William Blake)의 시 'Infant Joy(아가의 기쁨)'에 나오는 구절로,

버질이 야마토로 자신을 찔러 유리즌과 V로 나눠진 것이 5월 1일이고

V가 단테를 처음 만난 것이 5월 3일이니 단테를 만난 시점에서 V는 태어난 지 이틀 된 것이 맞긴 합니다.

  While Dante is confident that V's job would be easy, V claims to Dante that this demon is much different from the others he fought before because the demon is Dante's "reason for fighting" - his brother Vergil.

 단테는 V가 의뢰한 일이 쉬울 것이라고 확신하지만 V는 단테에게 이번엔 다를 것이라고 주장하는데 이 악마는 단테의 "싸우는 이유", 즉, 형 버질이기 때문이라고 말합니다.

 

 

 

 

 Morrison provided a helicopter to take V and Dante to Red Grave City.
 모리슨은 V와 단테가 레드 그레이브 시티로 갈 수 있도록 헬리콥터를 제공했습니다.
 V was also grateful for Morrison recruiting Trish and Lady.
 V는 모리슨이 트리쉬와 레이디를 고용한 것에 감사를 표했습니다.

 

[ 5월 15일 PM 04:44 ]

 

 Upon arriving inside Qliphoth tree, V hopes to attack Urizen before he is fully resurrected, but realized that Urizen had awakened as they were traveling up the tree.
 클리포트에 도착하자, V는 유리즌이 완전히 부활하기 전에 공격하려 했지만 클리포트를 오르던 도중 유리즌이 깨어났음을 알게 됩니다.
 Believing V to "dead weight", Dante ordered V to leave, which he complied with, much to Griffon's shock.
 V가 "짐짝"이라고 생각한 단테는 그리폰의 충격에도 아랑곳하지 않고 V에게 떠날것을 명령합니다.

 Unsure of the chances of his allies in defeating Urizen, V wants to get Nero as "insurance", despite knowing Nero's Devil Bringer arm was recently ripped off and Griffon's own protests.
 단테 일행이 유리즌을 쓰러뜨릴 것이라 확신할 수 없었던 V는 그리폰의 항의를 뒤로한 채, 비록 네로에게 데빌 브링어가 없었지만 그를 "보험"으로 삼고자 합니다.

 

 

V가 단테 일행과 헤어지기까지의 자세한 요약

- V Chapter 1 -

 

 V feels that Morrison is an excellent man for recruiting Dante, Lady and Trish along with a helicopter to take them to Red Grave City. Thanks to Morrison’s quick work, V, Lady, Trish and Dante are now inside the tree. Inside the tree is said to have a disgusting smell.
 V는 단테, 레이디, 트리쉬를 고용하고 그들을 레드 그레이브 시티로 데려갈 헬리콥터를 준비한 모리슨을 뛰어난 사람이라 생각합니다. 모리슨의 신속한 일처리 덕분에 V, 레이디, 트리쉬와 단테는 이제 클리포트 내부에 있습니다. 내부는 역겨운 냄새가 진동합니다.

 While in the tree, they hear an ominous roar and the ground begins to shake. V believes this to be the aftermath of the demon emperor resurrecting. V’s original plan was for the four of them to attack before he had awoken, now this plan seemed overly optimistic.
 클리포트 내부에서, 그들은 불길한 울림을 들었고 이윽고 땅이 흔들리기 시작합니다. V는 이것이 유리즌(demon emperor) 부활의 여파라고 믿습니다. V의 원래 계획은 유리즌이 깨어나기 전에 네 명이서 공격하는 것이었지만, 이제 그 계획은 지나치게 낙관적으로 보입니다.*

 Dante tells V to escape as V is dead weight. V reflects on how his former self would have been irritated by those words, but he does as Dante says and begins to leave.
 단테는 V에게 그가 "짐짝"이라며 탈출하라고 합니다. V는 과거의 자신(=버질)이 그 말에 얼마나 짜증냈을지 생각했지만 단테의 말대로 자리를 뜹니다.

 

 Griffon flies after him in shock and asks if he’s seriously leaving. V’s demon familiars don’t always share his demeanour at a given time as V is described as extremely calm. V is said to no longer have the excessive pride that he once had.

 충격에 빠진 그리폰은 그 뒤를 따르며 정말 떠나는 것인지 묻습니다. V는 아주 침착해 보이기 때문에, V의 소환수들이 이러한 그의 태도를 항상 따르는 것은 아닙니다.* V는 이제 더 이상 예전처럼 과한 자부심은 갖지 않는다고 대꾸합니다.

 *V는 단테의 말대로 순순히 물러나지만 V의 소환수인 그리폰은 이에 반대하는 태도를 보이는 것에 대한 부연 설명으로 보입니다.

 V tells Griffon he is going to get the youngster (Nero) as insurance. Griffon replies, “Youngster? You mean that brat Nero? Don’t be ridiculous! That guy stole his right arm, how’s he going to fight?” V replies that it’s better than nothing. He feels that getting a blood descendent of Sparda could help improve their odds of defeating the demon emperor even by a single hair. As V is quite familiar with the demon emperor, he isn’t prepared to take any chances.
 V는 그리폰에게 네로를 보험으로 데려올 것이라 말합니다. 그리폰이 대답합니다, "네로(Youngster)? 그 버릇없는 녀석? 농담하지마! 녀석은 오른팔도 도둑맞았는데 어떻게 싸운단 말이야?" V는 아무것도 하지 않는 것 보단 낫다고 대답합니다. V는 스파다의 피를 잇는 자라면, 비록 그것이 머리카락 한 가닥이라 할지라도, 유리즌을 쓰러뜨릴 가능성을 높이는데 도움이 될 수 있다고 생각합니다. V는 유리즌을 잘 알고 있었기에, 어떠한 위험도 감수할 수는 없었습니다.

 V emerges from the tree and uses the helicopter to travel to Fortuna. Uncharacteristically nervous, Griffon asks V if he gets the feeling that this is risky. V silently nods in response.
 V는 클리포트에서 빠져나와 헬리콥터를 타고 포르투나로 향합니다. 평소답지 않게 긴장한 그리폰이 V에게 위험한 느낌이 들지 않는지 묻습니다. V는 조용히 고개를 끄덕입니다.

  

 

 

 Using the helicopter, V quickly arrived at Fortuna and found Nero at the hospital just as he awoke from his coma.
 헬리콥터를 타고 신속히 포르투나에 도착한 V는 한 병원에서 혼수상태에서 막 깨어난 네로를 발견합니다.

 After introducing himself, V explained to Nero that it was Urizen that stole his arm and he hired Dante to subdue him.
 자신을 소개 한 V는 네로에게 데빌 브링어를 훔쳐간 것은 유리즌이며 그를 쓰려뜨리기 위해 단테를 고용했다고 설명했습니다.
 V asked Nero to join them and goads him by pointing out Nero's wounded pride.
 V는 네로의 상처입은 자존심을 자극하며 단테 일행과 합류할 것을 요구했습니다.
 Although Nero was suspicious of V, Nero agreed to help him to get his arm back.
 비록 네로는 V가 의심스러웠지만 데빌 브링어를 되찾기 위해 그에게 협조하기로 합니다.

 

 

V와 네로의 첫 만남에 대한 자세한 요약

- Nero Chapter 3 -

 Nero wakes up after being in a coma for several days. When he does, V is standing beside him. Nero immediately raises his guard after what happened to him, but V smiles at him. V admits that he came in through the windows and tells him that his name is V.

 네로는 며칠동안 혼수상태에 빠져있다가 깨어납니다. 그가 깨어났을 때, V가 그 옆에 서 있었습니다. 네로는 즉시 그를 경계하지만, V는 그에게 미소를 지어보입니다. V는 창문을 통해 들어온 사실을 인정하며 자신을 'V'라고 소개합니다.

 Nero would usually rely on the Devil Bringer to tell whether someone was a demon or not, but what remained of his arm was wrapped in bandages. Still trying to process what happened, Nero scowls at V and asks who he is. V tells Nero that he knows the demon who stole his arm. The demon acquired the power of Yamato from stealing Nero’s arm and now Dante is on his way to face him.

 네로는 여지껏 데빌 브링어로 사람인지 악마인지를 구별해왔지만 이제 데빌 브링어가 있던 자리엔 붕대만 감겨 있을 뿐이었습니다. 자신에게 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 파악하려 애쓰면서, 네로는 V를 노려보며 그가 누구인지 묻습니다. V는 네로에게 그의 팔을 훔친 악마를 알고 있다고 말합니다. 그 악마는 네로의 팔에 있던 야마토로부터 힘을 얻었으며, 현재 단테가 그와 맞서 싸우고 있습니다.

 Nero asks how V knows this, and he says that he is pursuing the same demon as Dante – the one who stole Nero’s arm. V says he can’t possibly beat this demon alone, so he enlisted Dante’s help. V then invites Nero to come with him as he doesn’t think Dante can beat this enemy alone.

 어떻게 그 사실을 알고 있냐는 네로의 질문에 V는 단테와 같은 악마-네로의 팔을 훔쳐간-를 쫓고 있기 때문이라고 대답합니다. V는 혼자서는 악마를 쓰러뜨릴 수 없었으므로 단테에게 도움을 청했다고 말합니다. V는 단테가 이 악마를 혼자서 쓰러뜨릴 수 없다고 생각하기 때문에 네로에게 함께 가 줄것을 요청합니다.  

 Nero is incredibly doubtful that there is an enemy alive that Dante can’t beat. Nero sticks out his bandaged arm as if to say ‘What am I supposed to do?’. Suddenly, the tattoos on V’s arm begin to wriggle and a bird emerges from them.

 네로는 단테가 이길 수 없는 적이 있다는 것에 의구심을 느낍니다. 네로는 붕대가 감긴 팔을 "내가 뭘 어쩌란 거야?"라고 말하듯 내밀어 보입니다. 그 때 갑자기, V의 팔에 새겨진 문신이 꿈틀거리더니 새 한마리가 모습을 드러냅니다.

 Griffon calls him a slowpoke and tells him to hurry up and get a move on as there’s not much time left. Nero thinks that this is coming from V, but V chimes in with his own words. He asks Nero if he doesn’t feel confident that he can beat the demon that stole his pride and his right arm.

 그리폰은 네로를 굼뱅이라 부르며 시간이 얼마 남지 않았으니 서둘러 이동하자고 합니다. 네로는 이를 V가 한 것이라 생각하지만, V는 자신의 말을 하고 있습니다.* V는 네로에게 그의 자존심과 오른팔을 앗아간 악마를 이길 자신이 없는 것인지 묻습니다.

*네로는 그리폰이 한 말을 V가 한 것이라 생각했지만 V는 그리폰이 말 하는 것과 별개로 자신의 말을 하고 있다는 뜻.

 In response, Nero grinds his teeth. He acknowledges that V looks suspicious, but he wants to take back what was stolen from him. Following V and the trail of this demon may be his only opportunity to do so. 

 그 질문에, 네로를 이를 갑니다. 네로는 V가 의심스러웠지만 도둑맞은 것을 되찾고 싶었습니다. V를 따라 그 악마의 흔적을 쫓는 것이 유일한 기회일지도 모릅니다.

He notes that he has experience fighting one-handed as he used to hide the Devil Bringer. The only problem was Kyrie – he didn’t think she would permit him to go demon hunting in his current condition.

 네로는 과거에 데빌 브링어를 숨기기 위해 한 손으로 싸워본 경험이 있음을 언급합니다. 유일한 문제는 키리에 입니다. 네로는 그녀가 지금의 상태로 자신이 악마를 잡으러 가는 것을 허락하지 않을 것이라 생각했습니다.

 Nero asks V if he can wait a little while so that he can retrieve Blue Rose and Red Queen; he plans to sneak into the garage and retrieve them so as not to alert Kyrie and Nico. Griffon and V tell Nero to hurry at the same time.

 네로는 V에게 블루 로즈와 레드퀸을 찾아올테니 잠시 기다려 달라고 합니다. 키리에와 니코에게 들키지 않도록 차고에 몰래 숨어들어 되찾을 계획입니다. 그리폰과 V가 네로에게 서둘러 달라고 동시에 말합니다.

 

 

 

[ 5월 16일 PM 08:06 ]

 

 After getting Nero's gear, V and Nero return to the Qliphoth tree and spotted Dante fighting Urizen from a distance.
 네로가 장비를 갖춘 뒤, 클리포트로 돌아온 V와 네로는 멀리서 단테가 유리즌과 싸우는 것을 목격합니다.

 

 V warned Nero not to underestimate Urizen since he gained a lot of power after taking Nero's Devil Bringer.
 V는 네로의 데빌 브링어로부터 힘을 얻은 유리즌을 과소평가하지 말라고 경고합니다.
 V went ahead of Nero, using Shadow's ability to carry himself since moving was becoming more difficult for V due to his decaying body.
 V는 그의 무너져가는 육체 때문에 스스로 이동이 힘들었기에 쉐도우의 능력을 이용해 네로보다 앞서갔습니다.

 

 V and his familiars dealt with demons coming from the tree to make things easier for Nero.
 V와 소환수들은 네로가 쉽게 다다를 수 있도록 앞서 클리포트의 악마들을 처리했습니다.
 Once Nero caught up with them, V told him to go ahead and leave the other demons to him.
 네로가 V와 소환수들을 따라 잡자, V는 다른 악마들은 자신에게 맡겨달라며 네로에게 먼저 가라고 말합니다.

 Nero and V are inside the demon tree, and Nero sees Dante fighting Urizen in the distance. Seeing Dante alive and fighting, Nero questions why he’s even here. V tells him not to underestimate the demon: he stole Nero’s right arm and gained a mighty power.

 V tells Nero that he will go on ahead and not to be late. With this, V floats off using Shadow’s ability. Nero says out loud how V is undoubtedly suspicious.

 V는 네로에게 먼저 갈테니 늦지 말라고 말합니다. 이에, V는 쉐도우의 능력을 이용하여 자리를 뜹니다.* 네로는 V가 의심할 여지없이 수상하다며 소리칩니다.

 Nero mentally rhymes off the reasons why V is suspicious: clearly using a pseudonym, looks suspicious, never says more than what’s necessary, and possesses strange abilities. However, he wants to believe that V is telling the truth. Whether it’s V’s voice, his gaze or even his appearance, there’s something about him that makes Nero want to follow him without reason.

 네로는 속으로 왜 V가 의심스러운지 생각해봅니다. 분명 가명을 사용하고 있으며, 겉보기에도 의심스러워 보이는데다, 필요 이상의 대화도 하지 않고, 이상한 능력까지 갖고 있습니다. 하지만 네로는 V가 진실을 말하고 있다고 믿고 싶습니다. V의 목소리나 시선, 심지어 외모에 상관없이 그에게는 네로가 이유없이 따르고 싶어지는 무언가가 있습니다.

 Nero says he’ll do as V says, then holds his right shoulder. “I’ve got a score to settle with that son of a bitch”. He thinks about the idea of an enemy even Dante can’t beat. Despite knowing that he’d have no prospect of winning, he marches forward. He can’t forgive the demon who stole his arm and wants to retrieve Yamato with his own hand.

 네로는 V의 말대로 하겠다고 한 뒤 자신의 오른쪽 어깨를 잡습니다. "난 그 망할 자식에게 갚아줄게 있거든." 네로는 단테조차 이기지 못하는 적에 대해서 생각해봅니다. 이길 가망이 없다는 것을 알고 있음에도, 네로는 앞으로 나아갑니다. 네로는 자신의 팔을 훔쳐간 악마를 용서할 수 없었으며 직접 야마토를 되찾고 싶었습니다.

 Nero thinks about how he was given Yamato. Dante originally made it his mission to retrieve Yamato, then he let Nero have it like he was just giving candy to a child. He didn’t understand why, but the fact that Yamato was so powerful meant that Dante really trusted Nero. Losing Yamato felt like a betrayal of Dante’s trust which Nero felt guilty about.

 Fly and mantis-like demons block Nero’s path to Urizen. Nero says, “What, feeling motivated? Let’s go” and revs up Red Queen.

 파리와 사마귀 처럼 생긴 악마들이 네로의 앞길을 막습니다. 네로는 "뭐, 의욕이 넘치나 본데? 해보자고."라고 말하며 레드퀸을 붙잡습니다*.

 *revs up Red Queen : rev up->'활성화하다'라는 의미로, 익시드 사용을 묘사한 것 같습니다.

 

 

 

 

- V Chapter 2 -

 

 V went ahead to deal with some demons for Nero, making things easier for him to reach Urizen as quickly as possible. As the demon tree Qliphoth served as a hole to the demon world, countless demons were breaking through in search of human blood.

 V는 네로가 유리즌에게 좀 더 빨리 다다를 수 있도록 악마들을 처리하기 위해 앞서갔습니다. 마계 나무인 클리포트가 마계의 구멍 역할을 하여, 수많은 악마들이 인간의 피를 찾아 나타났습니다.

 

 Despite clearing obstacles for him, Nero still hasn’t arrived. Griffon remarks that he’s late, and Shadow gives a small howl at V’s feet. Griffon translates for Shadow – “The kitty thinks so too”.

 네로를 위해 장애물(악마들)을 제거했음에도, 아직 네로는 도착하지 못했습니다. 그리폰이 네로가 늦는다고 말하자 쉐도우가 V의 발 밑에서 작게 울부짖습니다. 그리폰이 쉐도우의 말을 번역합니다, "고양이(쉐도우)도 그렇게 생각한대."

 V returns Shadow to its quick movement form and goes to find Nero. He reflects on how Shadow helps him to move beyond his current capabilities. At that moment, V is said to only have a little power as he is on the verge of death.

 V는 쉐도우를 빠른 이동 형태(퀵플레이)로 변형시켜 네로를 찾으러 되돌아 갑니다. V는 쉐도우가 자신의 신체적 한계를 극복하는데 얼마나 도움이 되는지를 생각합니다. 그 때에, V는 죽음의 기로에 있었기에 약간의 힘 밖에 없었습니다.*

 V finds Nero fighting demons. Nero insists that he doesn’t need help, but a large number of demons appear which Griffon begins to attack. Griffon says to Nero, “Don’t you get it, hero? Get a move on, we’ll handle these guys”. Griffon then yells at V to hurry up and finish off the enemies as they are unable to.

 V는 네로가 악마들과 싸우고 있는 것을 발견합니다. 네로는 도움따위 필요없다며 고집 부리지만, 그리폰이 공격하기 시작하자 곧 수많은 악마가 나타납니다. 그리폰은 네로에게, "모르겠어, 영웅님? 어서 가봐, 여긴 우리가 알아서 처리할테니."라고 말합니다. 그러고나서 그리폰은 V에게 적들이 무력할 때 어서 끝장내라고 소리칩니다.

 V describes Shadow and Griffon’s abilities as ‘dream-like’. He explains that while things can suffer because of their dreams, their dreams cannot kill them. In the same way, the beasts can inflict pain, but they cannot kill. It is V’s duty to kill demons that have been afflicted by the dream.

 V finishes off the demons while calling them trash.

 When V and Griffon arrived at Urizen's throne room, V saw Nero and Dante struggling to beat Urizen as the ground began shaking.
 V와 그리폰이 유리즌의 왕좌에 도착했을 때, 땅이 흔들리기 시작했고 유리즌을 쓰러뜨리기 위해 고군분투하는 네로와 단테를 목격했습니다.

 Dante yelled for them to run while he holds Urizen off, though V had to drag a stubborn Nero, who insisted on staying and help.
 단테는 자신이 유리즌을 붙잡고 있는 동안 도망치라고 소리쳤고, V는 남아서 그를 돕겠다며 고집을 부리는 네로를 억지로 끌고가야했습니다.

 

 When debris blocked the path to Urizen, the two met up with Morrison and told him what happened as tentacles started sprouted from the group and attacking people.
 잔해더미가 그들과 유리즌과의 사이를 갈라놓았고, V와 네로가 모리슨을 만나 클리포트에서 무슨일이 있었는지 설명하자 땅에서 솟아오른 촉수가 사람들을 공격하기 시작했습니다.
 While Nero wanted to fight, V demanded he retreats and revealed that the world will end after a month.
 네로는 싸우기를 원했지만 V는 그에게 물러설 것을 요구하며 한 달 뒤에 세상이 끝날 것이라고 말했습니다.
 V encouraged Morrison not to lose hope and Nero to get stronger since he is the only person that can defeat Urizen besides Dante.
 V는 모리슨에게는 희망을 잃지 말라고 하고, 네로에게는 단테를 제외하고 유리즌을 쓰러뜨릴 수 있는 유일한 사람은 그 뿐이라며 더 강해지라고 격려했습니다.
 V and Nero agreed to meet up again in a month, with Nero returning to Fortuna to train.

 Outside the tree, someone points to a part of the tree and says “Huh, what’s that?”. Part of the tree starts to wriggle, then Nero and V burst forth from it. They immediately head for Morrison.

 클리포트 밖에서 누군가 한 부분을 가리키며, "어, 저게 뭐지?"라고 말합니다. 클리포트의 일부가 꿈틀거리더니 네로와 V가 빠져나옵니다. 그들은 곧장 모리슨이 있는 곳으로 향합니다.

 Morrison asks them what happened and what’s happened to Dante. V tells him that Dante’s buying them time and they don’t have much time left. At this point, tentacles begin breaking through the road. These tentacles begin to pierce people, causing mass hysteria.

 모리슨은 그들에게 무슨일이 있었고, 단테는 어떻게 되었는지 묻습니다. V는 단테가 시간을 벌고는 있지만 남은 시간이 얼마 없다고 말합니다. 이 때, 땅에서 촉수가 솟아오르기 시작합니다. 이 촉수는 사람들을 꿰뚫기 시작했고, 집단 히스테리를 일으킵니다.

 

Morrison replies, “No way, Dante lost?”. Nero goes to attack the tentacles, but V stops him and tells him that he needs to retreat.

 Morrison asks V if they have a plan. V says while they don’t necessarily have a plan, they know that they need one thing – power. Morrison asks if that will be easy, and V says that they have no choice. V says that they have about a month left, but the world will end after that.

 모리슨은 V에게 앞으로 계획이 있는지 묻습니다. V는 반드시 계획을 가질 필요가 있는 건 아니지만 한 가지 - 힘이 필요하다는 것은 알고 있다고 말합니다. 모리슨이 그것이 과연 쉬울지 묻자, V는 더이상 선택의 여지가 없다고 합니다. V는 한 달 정도 여유가 있지만 그 후에 세상은 끝날것이라고 말합니다.

 Morrison sighs. There have been world-ending prophecies before, and Dante has always dealt with them. With his voice trembling, Morrison asks, “Hey, did Dante really lose?”. In response, V says “It is likely”.

 모리슨은 한숨을 내쉽니다. 예전에도 세게 종말을 암시하는 예언들이 있었지만, 단테는 항상 그것들을 처리해냈습니다. 모리스는 떨리는 목소리로, "이봐, 정말 단테가 졌다고?"라고 묻습니다. 이에, V는 "그럴 가능성이 높습니다."라고 대답합니다.

 Morrison says, “What the hell!” out loud. He feels useless as there is no one else to recruit who could help. V replies with, “Don’t give up. Humans don’t give up, that is their saving grace”.

 Nero, who was silent until now, asks if there really is a month until the world ends. V tells him to obtain as much power as possible as he is their only hope, besides Dante, to defeat Urizen.

 여지껏 침묵을 지키던 네로가 세상이 끝나기까지 정말 한 달이 남았는지 묻습니다. V는 네로가 단테 외에 유리즌을 쓰러뜨릴 수 있는 유일한 희망이므로 가능한 힘을 길러 놓으라고 말합니다.

 Nero asks Morrison to take him back to Fortuna and he will return in a month. Morrison respects Nero’s tenacity and notes that it is probably because he is young, but great power can be born from youth.

 네로는 모리슨에게 포르투나로 데려다 달라고 부탁하며 한 달 뒤에 돌아오겠다고 합니다. 모리슨은 네로의 그러한 집요함이 아직 어리기 때문에 가능하다고 말하면서도 강한 힘은 젊음에서 부터 나오는 것이라며 존중해줍니다.

 Several years ago, Dante told Morrison about an interesting young man that lived in Fortuna. He had demonic power similar to Dante’s, and Dante seemed to take a liking to his brash nature. This was evidenced by Dante asking Morrison to order and send a Devil May Cry neon sign to him.

 몇 년 전, 단테는 모리슨에게 포르투나에 사는 한 흥미로운 청년에 대해 이야기 해 준 적이 있습니다. 그 청년은 단테와 비슷한 악마의 힘을 가지고 있었고, 단테는 청년의 배짱을 마음에 들어하는 것 처럼 보였습니다. 그러한 사실*은 단테가 모리슨에게 부탁하여 청년에게 'Devil May Cry' 네온 사인**을 보내 준 것으로 알 수 있었습니다.

 V tells them that he will stay in Red Grave City. As he cannot gain power, he will stay and collect information. Nero says that he will see him a month; V nods and walks away.

 V는 네로에게 자신은 레드 그레이브 시티에 머물 것이라 말합니다. 그는 더이상 힘을 기를 수는 없었기에, 도시에 머물며 정보를 수집하겠다고 합니다. 네로는 V에게 한 달 뒤에 보자고 말합니다. V는 고개를 끄덕이고는 걸어갑니다. 

 

 

 As the days passed, V observed the Qliphoth tree growing bigger as it sucks more human blood.
 V는 시간이 지날수록 클리포트가 많은 사람들의 피를 빨아들이면서 점점 더 커지는 것을 목격합니다. 

 Griffon then suggested that V should evacuate the city to slow Qliphoth's growth, but V rejected the idea because he didn't believe anyone would listen to him and he did not have the authority or time to organize a city-wide evacuation.
 그리폰은 V에게 클리포트의 성장을 늦추기 위해선 시민들을 대피시켜야 한다고 제안했지만 V는 아무도 자신의 말을 믿어주지 않을 것이고 자신에겐 도시 전체를 피난시킬 권한도, 시간도 없다며 거절합니다.
 While V tried his best within his capabilities, he felt great regret about not being able to do more.
 V는 자신의 능력이 되는 한 최선을 다했지만, 그 이상은 할 수 없다는 것에 매우 애석해합니다.
 When Griffon questioned if Nero will return, V commented that Nero isn't the type to accept a "losing streak", causing an amused Griffon to quip about it.
 네로가 돌아올 것 같냐는 그리폰의 질문에 V는 네로가 "연패(連敗)" 당하고만 있는 타입이 아니라며 그리폰의 빈정거림을 무마시킵니다.
 V contemplated over his beloved book of poems, which also predicted the Qliphoth's appearance.
 V는 자신이 아끼는 시집 또한 클리포트의 출현을 예견한 것을 염두해 두고 있었습니다.

 

 V bitterly recalled his former self's delusions and how he lied to Nero since he already knew everything about Urizen
 V는 이미 유리즌에 대한 모든것을 알고 있었기에 버질이었을 때의 자신의 망상과 어떻게 네로에게 거짓말을 하게 되었는지에 대한 쓰라린 회상에 잠깁니다.
 Although he wanted to avoid too much movement since his body was eroding, V resolved to help the humans and to minimize the damage as much as possible until Nero returns.
 몸이 점점 침식되고 있었기 때문에 움직이는 것을 되도록 피하고 싶었지만, V는 네로가 돌아오기 전까지 인간을 돕고 피해를 최대한 줄여보기로 결심합니다.

 In Red Grave City, the Qliphoth continues to grow and the hole allowing passage between the human and demon world grows larger.

 레드 그레이브 시티의 클리포트는 성장을 계속하여 마계와 인간계를 연결하는 구멍은 점점 더 커지고 있었습니다.  

 Griffon asks V if the situation would be better if they evacuated people from the city in advance. If people and their blood were kept away from the Qliphoth, it would not have grown so quickly.

 그리폰은 V에게 사람들을 미리 대피 시켰더라면 상황이 더 나아졌을지 묻습니다. 사람들과 그들의 피가 클리포트로부터 멀리 떨어졌었다면, 클리포트가 이렇게 빨리 성장하지는 못했을 것입니다.

 V replies that nobody would believe him if he tried to warn them. It was also not possible for him to negotiate with politicians as he didn’t have that type of authority or that much time. V tried his best with what he could do, but his heart was still dominated by indescribable regret.

 V는 그가 사람들에게 경고해도 아무도 자신의 말을 믿지 않았을 것이라 대답합니다. 그에게는 그럴만한 권한도 없거니와 시간도 많지 않았기 때문에 정치인들과 협상하는 것 조차 불가능했습니다. V는 자신이 할 수 있는 한 최선을 다했지만, 그의 마음은 이루 말할 수 없는 후회로 가득 찼습니다.

 Griffon asks V if he’s worried, and he says he is. It won’t be long until armies are despatched to Red Grave City, but it’s useless as they too will become sacrifices to the Qliphoth.

 그리폰이 V에게 걱정되는지 묻자, V는 그렇다고 대답합니다. 곧 군대가 레드 그레이브 시티에 파견되겠지만, 그들 또한 클리포트에 희생될 것이므로 소용이 없습니다.

 Griffon asks if he thinks Nero will return. V replies, “He’ll come back. He’s not the type of guy to accept a losing streak”. Griffon laughs and says, “And who does he get that from?”. V simply replies, “No idea”. 

 그리폰은 네로가 과연 돌아올 것인지 묻습니다. V는 "그는 돌아올거야. 연패(連敗)를 납득할만한 녀석이 아냐."라고 대답합니다. 그리폰이 웃으며 말합니다, "그건 누굴 닮아서 그렇대?" V는 짧게, "글쎄"라고 대답합니다.

 V looks at the book in his hands, an old collection of poems. V treasured this book when he was a young boy. When you turn the page, each psalm is eye-catching.

 V는 그의 손에 들린 오래된 시집을 바라봅니다. V는 어린 시절 이 책을 매우 소중히 여겼습니다. 페이지를 넘길 때마다, 각각의 시편이 눈길을 사로 잡습니다.

 

 ‘And it grew both day and night till it bore an apple bright’. The title of the psalm this line originates from is ‘Poison Tree’ – the psalm that predicted the Qliphoth.  Remembering the delusions of his former self, V grimaces and closes the book. 

 '그것은 밤낮으로 자라나 빛나는 사과 하나를 맺었다.'* 이 행에서 유래한 해당 시편의 제목은 클리포트의 출현을 예언한 '독나무'입니다. 과거 자신(=버질)의 망상**을 회상하며, V는 얼굴을 찡그리며 책을 덮습니다.

 V begins to move and Griffon asks where he is going. V says he is going to help the humans who are being attacked by the Qliphoth. In response, Griffon says, “Help!? You!? The humans!? Seriously? Did you hit your head or something?”.

 V가 움직이기 시작하자 그리폰이 어디로 가는지 묻습니다. V는 클리포트의 공격을 받고 있는 인간들을 도울 것이라고 말합니다. 이에 그리폰은, "도와!? 네가!? 인간들을!? 진심이야? 어디 머리라도 부딪힌거 아냐?"라고 말합니다.

 V told Nero that he was staying in Red Grave City to gather information, but that was a lie. V already knew everything. He knew why the tragedy was unfolding in this city. He knew Urizen’s identity. He knew everything down to its very origin.

 V는 네로에게 정보 수집을 위해 레드 그레이브 시티에 머물겠다고 했지만 그건 거짓말이었습니다. V는 이미 모든 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그는 왜 이 도시에서 비극이 벌어지고 있는지 알고 있었습니다. 그는 유리즌의 정체를 알고 있었습니다. 그는 그 기원에 이르기까지 모든것을 알고 있었습니다.

 While remaining in this town, he wanted to avoid too much movement as his body was eroding away. But still, V wanted to help the people of the city.

 마을에 있는 동안, V는 몸이 서서히 무너져가고 있었기에 되도록 움직임을 피하고 싶었습니다. 하지만, 그는 도시에 있는 사람들을 돕고 싶었습니다.

 Griffon flies after him while saying, “Hey V, wait! Are you seriously doing this? You don’t have to, but I’ll help!”. V knew that saving one or two people wouldn’t stop the Qliphoth, but if it bought one or two seconds more, he was still willing to do it. V’s soul told him he was obligated to do it.

 그리폰은 V의 뒤를 따르며, "이봐 V, 기다려! 정말 할 거야? 네가 그럴 필요는 없지만, 그렇다면 나도 도울게!"라고 말합니다. V는 한두명을 구한다고 해서 클리포트의 성장을 막을 수 없다는 걸 알고 있었지만, 그로 인해 1-2초의 시간이라도 더 벌 수 있다면 기꺼이 구할 생각입니니다. V 그 자신의 영혼이 그럴 의무가 있다고 말하고 있었습니다.

 V says out loud, “I’ll do what I can”. He vows to minimise the damage in the city until Nero returns in a month.

 V는 큰소리로, "내가 할 수 있는 일을 하겠어."라고 말합니다. 그는 한 달 뒤 네로가 돌아올 때 까지 도시의 피해를 최대한 줄여보기로 다짐합니다.

 Once a month had passed, V called Nero to set a meeting place so they plan their next move.

 한 달 뒤, V는 네로에게 연락해 다음 계획을 위해 만날 장소를 정했습니다.
 V arrived to their rendezvous point just as Nero was finishing battling the Goliath.
 네로가 골리앗과의 싸움을 막 끝냈을 때 V가 약속 장소에 도착했습니다.

한편 무료 소환수 친구들은 버질에게 돌아가지 않고 단테와 맞서다 최후를 맞는다.

내가 생각하기에 소환수들은 버질이 넬로 안젤로 시절의 악몽에서 탄생했으므로 자신들이 버질에게 돌아가봤자

트라우마로 밖에 남지 않을 것이라 생각하곤 나름 V(버질)과의 의리를 지키고자 승산이 없는 걸 알면서도 단테에게 덤빈 것 같다.

자신들을 쓰러뜨리는데 단테의 힘을 조금이라도 빼놓으면 버질에게 도움이 될지도 모르고,

그렇게 자신들(악몽)이 사라져 줌으로써 버질의 트라우마를 없애주려 생각했을지도 모른다.

그래놓곤 동생한테도 지고, 아들한테고 지고...

마계로 떠나기 직전 버질이 V의 책을 네로에게 넘겨주고 감으로써, V의 책은 이제 네로가 가지게 된다.

 

이를 마지막으로 V의 작중 행적은 끝이 난다.

 

 

 

 

게임 내 스토리만 봤을 때는 V가 버질로 돌아가기 위한 빅피쳐를 설계해놓고

통수를 친 캐릭터로 비춰질 수 있지만 프리퀄 소설 내용과 종합해보면 딱히 그런건 아니었다.

요약하면,

1. V는 버질과 분리된 직후 자신에게 남은 시간이 얼마 없다는 것과, 유리즌의 클리포트 계획을 깨닫게 된다.

2. 자신이 소멸되는 것과 유리즌의 대량 학살 계획을 막기 위해 V는 유리즌과 하나가 되어 버질로 되돌아가고자 한다.

3. 혼자서는 유리즌을 쓰러뜨릴 수 없었기에 유리즌이 완전히 부활하기 전, 단테와 네로에게 그를 쓰려뜨려줄 것을 부탁했지만 둘 다 패배하고 만다.

4. 힘이 부족하기 때문이라고 생각한 V는 클리포트가 열매를 맺기까지 남은 시간인 한 달 동안 네로에게 강해져서 돌아오라고 말하며 도시에 남아 혼자서 어떻게든 피해를 줄여보고자 고군분투한다.

5. 한 달 뒤, 레드 그레이브 시티로 돌아온 네로와 함께 클리포트 열매가 열리기 전에 유리즌을 쓰러뜨리고자 했지만 결국 유리즌은 클리포트 열매를 손에 넣는데 성공하고, 더 강해져서 돌아온 단테에게 패한다.

6. 자신의 육체가 한계에 가까움을 느낀 V는 네로에게 매달리듯 사정하여 가까스로 다 죽어가는 유리즌 곁에 다다를 수 있었고, 마침내 버질로 돌아간다.

 

처음엔 단테가 유리즌을 쓰러뜨릴 수 있을 것이라 믿고 도시가 클리포트에 잠식되기 전에 버질로 돌아가서 사태를 수습하려 했으나,

유리즌의 힘이 생각보다 강력하여 결국 클리포트 열매가 열리고 난 뒤에서야 버질로 돌아갈 수 있었던 거였다고 본다.

 

게임 내에서는 자세한 내용을 알려주지 않으니 이러한 사실을 모르고 보면 V가 단순 악역(?)으로 보일 가능성이 다분하긴하다.

V의 행적을 살펴보면 도저히 버질의 일부라고 생각하기 힘들 정도로 인간적인 면모가 많다.

 쓸데 없는 자존심 안세우고 순순히 물러서는 모습이라던가, 죄책감에 괴로워하는 모습이라던가, 

어떻게든 사람들을 구하려고 노력하는 모습이라던가...

 

미션 17 진행 중, 네로의 부축으로 힘겹게 유리즌이 있는 곳으로 이동하는 장면에서 V는 아래와 같은 말을 한다.

"The truth is... I wanted to be protected and loved... But I was alone. My only choice was to survive."

"사실은... 난 보호 받고, 사랑 받고 싶었어... 하지만 난 혼자였지. 그저 살아남는 수밖에 없었어."

가족과 헤어지고 혼자서 어떻게든 살아남아야 했던 혹독한 시기가

오직 강한 힘만을 추구하는 지금의 추한 버질로 변모시킨게 아닐까 싶다.
버질의 인간적 부분인 V가 다 죽어가는 마당에 저런 말을 한 걸 보면 저게 버질의 숨겨진 본심이라도 봐도 될 듯.

문학 소년이었던 버질의 어린시절, 에바(엄마)를 악마의 손에 잃기 전의

순수했던 딱 그시절까지의 부분이 분리된 것이 V가 아닐까 한다.

 

일회용(?) 캐릭터 치고는 제법 마음에 드는데..

다 죽어가던 버질도 살려냈는데 V도 어떻게 부활 시켜줄 수 없습니까, 캡콤?

단테 : 유리즌도 같이 튀어나와서 안된다, 조카야.
